Today our 4th graders participated in the Wax Museum. Students became experts about a certain historical figure that we studied this year. They wrote informational essays, wrote speeches, and recorded their speeches using the SeeSaw app. The speeches were turned into QR codes for an interactive, 21st century wax museum. If you were unable to attend but want to see your child's speech, log into their SeeSaw account and watch the recording!

Today our class had the opportunity to see the real side of marine research. We watched GPB's live dive at Gray's Reef off of the coast of Savannah. This experience tied in well with our Ecosystems storyline that was centered around the energy flow within a coral reef ecosystem.
Today our class reviewed all the math topics we've learned in 4th grade by engaging in an outdoor scavenger hunt! It was a great way for the students to be up and moving while they reviewed math concepts! Our class has been learning about Ecosystems. The Driving Question for our unit was, “How does energy flow through a coral reef ecosystem?” Our students collected information to answer this question for the past several weeks. As the final product, our students will be building robots and programming them to demonstrate their understanding of how energy flows through one of the Great Barrier Reef’s food chains. They will record a presentation using SeeSaw. We have just started building the robots. Stay tuned for the final product next week! We have begun using an online portfolio system called SeeSaw. Today our students used it to create sentences with prepositional phrases with things around the room. It was a fun way to assess their understanding and get them up and moving. I encourage you ask your child to show you their SeeSaw work. As we are continuing with our Ecosystems Storyline in science, we engaged in a carousel activity in which students walked around the room and listed the producers, consumers, and decomposers in the Coral Reef ecosystem. This is helping our students prepare for the robotics activity we'll start next week. Our students also cashed in Liveschool points to learn their math lesson outside. It was a great and fun opportunity for math review. Our students had their 3rd grading period Awards Ceremony in the classroom. We were very proud of our students and all of their hard work this 3rd quarter! We have started our ecosystems unit. Our focus is on the flow of energy through a coral reef ecosystem. Today we went on a Google Virtual Reality expedition to several coral reefs around the world. It was a great experience for our students to build an understanding of what we are studying. Our students had an engaging opportunity to decode a cipher to find out where a book was hidden in the school. Our class decoded it in 20 minutes and found the book in no time! Ask your child what the experience was like.
This week was a blast! We are very proud of our students as they continue to get into their new 4th grade routine. The end of the 9 week grading period is approaching, and I think you will be happy to know that your children have given their best effort every day! With our school's PBIS incentive, LiveSchool, the students may cash in points to earn rewards. This week our students chose to spend their points to eat lunch outside. Classroom Needs:
Thank you for being so involved in your child's education! In science, we have begun their Light PBL (Project Based Learning) unit. Throughout this time, your students will be learning about light to answer the driving question, "How can we use what we know about light to help keep pedestrians and cyclists safe?" This will be a very engaging, meaningful unit. Ask your students what they have learned so far about light! (Opaque, Translucent, Transparent, Lense Types, & Prisms). There is a slideshow of some of our light investigation stations at the bottom of this post. In Social Studies, We are learning beginning our unit on European Explorers. We focus on explorers from Spain, France, & England. Talk to your children about where these places are and what they are like! In math we are continuing to work on multiplicative comparisons. Please continue to review multiplication facts with your children. We recommend flashcards or encouraging your child to get on their school Reflex accounts at home. If they master their multiplication facts, math will be much easier for them this year & in the years to come. In reading we have just finished our read aloud, Blood on the River. It tied into our Native American unit and was so engaging for the students. Help them with their reading comprehension by asking them what happened in the story. Encourage them to elaborate and add detail. We look forward to another wonderful week!!! |
