STapleton & Frazier Class
2016-2017
Now that Milestones are over, we'll be reviewing the topics that we've learned through our storylines this year in science by engaging in STEAM Challenges. These STEAM challenges will challenge our students to work collaboratively with one another to solve problems presented to them. Below is a slideshow that has some images displaying our students working on the most recent challenge, "Can you use what you know about force and motion to create a Peep-mobile?" We have also started preparing for the 4th grade Wax Museum & working on a Build a Zoo using area & perimeter math project!

Your child learned about the flow of energy through ecosystems by studying the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem. Check out the way that they programmed the RoboRobo robotics kits to show their knowledge of how energy flows through one of the Great Barrier Reef's food chains.
Today our students participated in a Zoom conference with the marine biologist, Dr. Tonya Shearer, from Discover Science Center. It was an extension to our ecosystems storyline with the driving question, "How does energy flow through the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem?" The students discussed factors that affected the health of coral reef ecosystems with Dr. Shearer, specifically discussing invasive species. It was a great learning opportunity for the students! We had some technical difficulties trying to post the past few weeks. Our class has been working very hard preparing to Milestones! We are doing a Milestones Bootcamp each Friday. To help your child, work with them on math and reading. We are currently learning about Opinion Writing, comparing/contrasting drama, poetry, and prose, Westward Expansion, Solar System, and Geometry.
Our class had a very busy week! We created Book Trailers using iMovie, participated in code.org's Hour of Code, had a Zoom video conference with WSBTV meteorologist, Brad Nitz, and went on a Google Virtual Reality cloud expedition! Check out the Holsenbeck Facebook page for pictures! We also finished giving our TRC Reading Level Assessment. We were very happy to see such HUGE improvement in our classroom reading levels. Continue to speak to your students about their learning goals. Remember to read each night. As we close the semester, we will be finishing learning about the American Revolution, Weather/Water Cycle, informational reading and writing, and fractions. We will take the benchmarks next week. We hope to see our students preform very well on those!
Our Christmas Party will be next Thursday at 9:00 AM. Ask your students for the Christmas Party letter. Or click this link to read it. We had a fantastic time engaging in Colonial Day activities on Friday! It was the perfect way to end our unit. We engaged in a butter making STEAM Challenge, created cornmeal playdough, flapjacks, and an edible TeePee craft (to discuss the examples of conflict/cooperation between Native Americans and American Colonists). In the coming weeks, be on the look out for our Holiday Party letter!
We are very proud of how the students have been doing this year. We have already seen so much improvement in all of them! The students and us had a fantastic time on our field trip to Stone Mountain. We're looking forward to Colonial Day next Friday, November 18, which is how we are closing our American Colonies unit. After Thanksgiving our students will begin learning fractions and continue multiplying and dividing. In ELA we will continue to work on Informational Writing & Identifying Informational Text Structures & Features. In Social Studies we will begin learning about the Causes of the American Revolution. In Science we have begun our Water Cycle/Weather Storyline. I look forward to ending the semester strong! :)
