We're finishing up another great week of school! We started out today with the book character parade and book talks, then made totem poles like the Kwakiutl Native Americans, and finished out the day by cashing in Liveschool points. It has been a great day in Ms. Stapleton and Mrs. Frazier's class! We hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!

We have started our Native American unit in Social Studies. We will learn about the Inuit, Kwakiutl, Pawnee, Nez Perce, Hopi, and Seminole tribes. So far we have learned about the Inuit and Kwakiutl. As a culminating activity to learn about the Inuit tribe the students were given a STEAM Challenge: Build an igloo out of 18 sugar cubes. The students were very creative and worked very cooperatively with one another. Ask your students how the Inuit tribe used their environment to obtain food, clothing, and shelter in their Arctic environment. Wow! What a fantastic first week of school! We already love our students so much. This week our students blew us away with their kindness toward one another and their hard work as we began to dive into 4th grade curriculum! We believe the students should have opportunities to engage in different STEAM challenges. STEAM stands for Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics. These challenges provide students with higher-order thinking activities and help them learn teamwork skills. They are also very fun and engaging for students. This week our students engaged in a STEAM Challenge called, "Code your name using Binary Code to make a bracelet." This was a fun way for our students to share more about themselves on the first day of school. Ask them about binary code and to see their bracelets if you haven't already. Be on the look out for homework beginning next week. Reading logs and math work will be assigned almost each day. Also if your child read 10 books over the summer, please send a list of their books next week so that they can walk in the reading parade. We look forward to a great week with these sweet, smart, fun kiddos! :)
